Rev. Michael Benson was called to preach while attending Bethany Nazarene College, now Southern Nazarene University. He is a graduate of SNU and of Nazarene Theological Seminary. Asbury Theological Seminary conferred the Doctor of Ministry of Spiritual Formation degree in May 2001. In addition to serving in staff assignments in Tennessee, Missouri and Oklahoma, he spent ten years pastoring congregations in Colorado, California and Kansas. Both the Sacramento and Kansas Districts elected him as their District NYI President. He also has served as Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation at First Church of the Nazarene in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1983 Michael entered into a prayer covenant with his father, the late Bob Benson, to focus more attention on prayer and spiritual discipline. Out of this experience was born the book, Disciplines For the Inner Life, which he co-authored with his father. The intention of this book is to provide insight and guidance for the formation and nourishment of the inner life.
In 1991 Michael began to sense a release from the pastoral ministry in order to concentrate on calling the church to accountability in prayer and spiritual renewal. A strong Bible preacher and able teacher, Michael is committed to the message of holiness and will seek to encourage men and women to pursue the discipline of holy living. He has conducted 300+ revivals, retreats, and camp meetings.
Beginning in August of 2002, Michael will begin serving as Chaplain to the University at Olivet Nazarene University. ONU is a private, Christian, liberal arts university and a service of the Church of the Nazarene. Located in Bourbonnais, Illinois, a community just 50 minutes south of Chicago's loop, ONU has a student population of about 3,300 students (2,100 undergraduates).
His wife, the former Gwen Balliett of Colorado Springs, along with their children, Emily Jean, and Andrew, make their home in Hendersonville, Tennessee. Katie is a student at Olivet Nazarene University.
