In 1983 Michael entered into a prayer covenant with his father, the late Bob Benson, to focus more attention on prayer and spiritual discipline. Out of this experience was born the book, Disciplines For the Inner Life, which he co-authored with his father. The intention of this book is to provide insight and guidance for the formation and nourishment of the inner life.

Bob Benson devoted his entire life answering God’s call to preach. That path was predictable for young men following God’s Call: preparation in undergraduate and graduate studies and then launching into pastoral ministry. Bob and his wife Peggy pastored congregations in California and Florida. The majority of his working life, however, he spent as a third generation music publisher in Nashville, Tennessee, seeking to promote the proclamation through music and song. But he never stopped preaching. He was an active layman in his local church teaching Sunday School and served for a while as volunteer chaplain at Trevecca Nazarene University. A popular speaker at retreats and college campuses, Bob built quite a following of persons who loved his wit and his insight and his soft spoken way of telling us about God’s love and grace. He was an annual speaker at the PraiseGathering in Indianapolis. His writings continue to be a source of inspiration and spiritual formation for many.

"May I never boast of anything except the cross of my Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me and I to the world." Most of our identity with Christ and the cross event has placed the emphasis on our dying with Christ. We are "crucified with Christ," Paul writes.
But the third phrase of this verse: "by whom the world has been crucified to me", is telling us something different. It is saying that when Christ was crucified on the cross for us, the world was crucified to us. This has a strange sound to our ears. What does this mean What are the implications of living today in a world that has been crucified to us.
